Auto Detailing FAQ: 30 Questions Answered
Everything Tampa Bay drivers ask before booking a mobile auto detail. Organized into six categories: General, Mobile Service, Pricing, Services, Cars and Conditions, and Booking. All answers are written by Markus, owner-operator of Markus Detailing, Wesley Chapel, FL.
General Questions
What is auto detailing?
Auto detailing is a deep cleaning, polishing, and protection process that goes far beyond a car wash. A real detail includes interior shampoo, leather conditioning, paint decontamination (clay bar, iron-fallout remover), machine polish, and a protective top coat (wax, sealant, or ceramic). It restores a vehicle close to its showroom condition and takes 2 to 5 hours depending on package and vehicle size.
How is detailing different from a car wash?
A car wash cleans the exterior surface in 5 to 10 minutes. A detail takes 2 to 5 hours and covers every interior and exterior surface: door jambs, vents, headliner, wheel barrels, exhaust tips, plastic trim, glass inside and out. Detailing also includes paint correction and protection, which a wash cannot do. A wash maintains, a detail restores.
What does owner-operated mean for me?
Owner-operated means Markus does every job personally. No subcontractors, no rotating crew, no quality drift between bookings. You get the same hands and the same standard on every visit. That is the structural reason the rating has stayed at 5.0 stars after 29 reviews. The trade-off is capacity: we book a finite number of jobs per week.
How often should I detail my car in Florida?
For Tampa Bay drivers, twice a year for a full detail plus monthly maintenance washes is the sweet spot. Florida sun, salt air, love bugs, and afternoon storms attack paint and interior plastics faster than in cooler climates. A ceramic coating extends the interval between full details. Pet owners and parents of young kids should add a quarterly interior detail.
Can detailing improve resale value?
Yes, significantly. A pre-sale detail package (full detail plus headlight restoration plus engine bay cleaning) typically returns 5 to 10 times its cost at private-party resale. Buyers form an impression in the first 10 seconds and a clean, polished vehicle photographs and shows better than a dirty equivalent. Dealers do the same prep before putting cars on the lot for a reason.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Markus Detailing is licensed to operate in Florida and carries full general liability insurance covering work performed on customer vehicles and on customer property (driveways, parking lots). Proof of insurance is available on request before the appointment.
How long have you been in business?
Six years. Markus Detailing has operated continuously in Tampa Bay since 2020, with Wesley Chapel as our home base. In that time we have earned 29 verified 5-star reviews on Thumbtack and Top Pro 2025 status.
Mobile Service Questions
Do you really come to my house?
Yes. We are a true mobile service. The van carries a pressure washer, water tank, generator, steam machine, polisher, vacuum, and all chemicals. You need a flat parking spot with roughly one car length of clearance on each side. We set up and tear down without bothering you.
Do I need to provide water or electricity?
No. We bring both. A 35 gallon water tank handles most full details, and a portable generator powers the polisher and vacuum. If you offer a hose hookup we will gladly use it (saves tank capacity), but it is not required.
Can you detail at my office or workplace?
Yes, if the property allows it. Many Tampa Bay employers permit it for employees, especially in parking garages or office park lots. We coordinate with you and (if needed) property management before the appointment.
Can you detail at an apartment complex?
Yes, with management approval. Most Tampa Bay complexes allow mobile detailing in designated parking spots. We bring our own water and power and clean up completely. We will help draft a quick note to your property manager if needed.
What if I am not home during the appointment?
Many customers leave the keys in a secure spot and we text photos when the job is done. Payment can be sent via Zelle, Venmo, or card over the phone. This is very common for work-from-home professionals who do not want to interrupt meetings, and for office workers who book the detail at their workplace parking lot.
How much space do you need to set up?
One car length of clearance on each side of the vehicle and roughly 10 feet behind for the van. A standard two-car driveway works perfectly. Single-car driveways work too if there is street parking nearby for the van. Apartment parking lots work as long as we can position the van within hose reach of the vehicle.
Do you make a mess?
No. We catch most water with the vehicle and the surrounding 3 to 6 feet of pavement. Cleanup happens before we leave. There is no soap runoff into storm drains because pH-neutral car shampoo plus the small water volume of mobile work does not generate the discharge that a fixed-bay shop produces.
Pricing Questions
How much does mobile detailing cost in Tampa?
Most Tampa Bay full details run between $175-$325 for a sedan and $900-$1,400 for a multi-year ceramic coating package. Basic exterior details start at $90-$150. See the full pricing page for service-by-service rates.
Why is mobile detailing not cheaper than a shop?
Mobile detailing has identical labor and product costs to a shop, plus added equipment (water tank, generator, van), travel time, and fuel. The trade-off is convenience: no drop-off, no rental car, no waiting room. Quality matches or exceeds shop work because every job gets the owner.
Do you charge a travel fee?
No travel fee within 25 miles of Wesley Chapel. Between 25 and 45 miles a small fee may apply and is included in the quote up front. Beyond 45 miles we discuss pricing case by case.
What payment methods do you accept?
Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover), cash, Venmo, Zelle, and Apple Pay. Payment is due after the walk-through. No deposit required for standard packages.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. Recurring maintenance customers get 10 to 15 percent off. Multi-vehicle bookings at the same address get 10 percent off each additional vehicle. First responders and military get 10 percent off any service. Referrals get a $25 credit toward the next detail after the referred customer completes their first booking.
Do you require a deposit?
No deposit required for standard packages (full detail, interior, exterior, headlight, engine bay). Ceramic coating and paint correction jobs over $500 may require a 25 percent deposit to hold the day-long slot, refundable up to 48 hours before the appointment. Fleet contracts may use a different billing structure.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. Our minimum service charge is around the price of a basic exterior detail. For very small standalone jobs (just headlights, just tires), we may suggest bundling with another service or scheduling on the same day as another nearby appointment to make the visit worthwhile.
Service Questions
What is included in a full detail?
Exterior: foam bath, two-bucket contact wash, iron-fallout remover, clay bar, hand dry, wax or sealant, tire dressing, plastic trim treatment. Interior: vacuum, steam clean carpets and seats, leather condition, vent and crack detailing, glass inside, dashboard and door panel treatment.
Do you do ceramic coatings?
Yes. We install Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light, Gtechniq EXO, and CarPro CQuartz coatings. Packages run from 1 year (entry) to 5 years (Gtechniq Crystal Serum). Ceramic coating requires paint correction first to lock in a flawless surface.
What is paint correction?
Paint correction is the machine-polishing process that removes swirls, light scratches, oxidation, and water-spot etching from the clear coat. We offer 1-step (refines and brightens) and 2-step (removes deeper defects then refines). Always done before ceramic coating.
Can you remove pet hair?
Yes. Pet hair extraction is a common add-on or built into a full interior detail. We use rubber brushes, vacuum, and compressed air. Heavy embedded hair (golden retriever, husky, German shepherd) may add $40 to $120 depending on severity.
Can you remove smoke smell?
Yes. Smoke odor is one of the harder jobs. Process: deep interior clean, fabric and headliner shampoo, ozone treatment for 60 to 90 minutes, and enzyme spray on vents. Most vehicles are 90 to 100 percent odor-free after one treatment. Heavy long-term smoker vehicles may need a second pass.
What is the difference between wax, sealant, and ceramic coating?
Wax (carnauba-based) lasts 6 to 8 weeks and gives the warmest gloss. Sealant (polymer) lasts 4 to 6 months with a sharper, more synthetic look. Ceramic coating (silica-based, like Gtechniq Crystal Serum or CarPro CQuartz) lasts 1 to 5 years and creates the slickest, most hydrophobic surface. Each step up the ladder costs more but protects longer.
What is clay bar and do I need it?
A clay bar is a tacky synthetic putty that lifts bonded contamination off paint that washing alone cannot remove: brake dust particles, tree sap droplets, industrial fallout, overspray. In Tampa Bay, recommended once or twice per year. Required before any paint correction or ceramic coating because protection products do not bond to contaminated paint.
Cars and Conditions Questions
Do you work on luxury and exotic cars?
Yes. We have detailed Porsche, BMW M, Audi RS, Tesla, Mercedes AMG, and similar vehicles across Tampa Bay. We use brand-appropriate products (no all-purpose cleaners on Alcantara, no abrasive polishes on soft single-stage paint) and document the work before and after.
Do you work on lifted trucks?
Yes. Lifted trucks and 3-row SUVs fall in our largest pricing bucket. Wheel wells, undercarriage trim, and roof access take longer. We carry a step stool and longer wash mitts for the roof. Quote includes the size adder.
Can you remove water spots from glass?
Most water spots come off with a glass polishing compound. Severe etched spots (well water mineral deposits) may need polishing the glass with a dedicated tool. Tampa Bay water spots are usually moderate and lift in one pass.
Will detailing remove deep scratches?
Light scratches that do not catch a fingernail come out with paint correction. Deep scratches that go through the clear coat into base coat or primer cannot be fully polished out. Those require paint touch-up or panel paint, which we do not do (we refer to a body shop).
Can you treat mold or mildew in carpet?
Yes. Tampa Bay humidity grows mold in cars left wet (sunroof leak, AC drain backup). Process: deep shampoo, enzyme treatment, hot extraction, then dehumidify. Severe mold may require carpet pad replacement, which is outside our scope. We will tell you up front if the mold has progressed beyond what surface treatment can resolve.
What about leather seats that are cracking?
Cracked leather is dry leather. We deep clean with a pH-neutral leather cleaner, then condition with a lanolin-based or oil-based conditioner to restore flexibility. Severe cracking that has penetrated the leather grain cannot be reversed by conditioning but can be slowed. Routine conditioning every 3 to 4 months prevents new cracks from forming.
Do you do convertibles and soft tops?
Yes. Convertible soft tops get a dedicated cleaner (RaggTopp, 303 Soft Top) and water repellent treatment to keep them shedding rain. Care is gentle compared to hardtops and we never use stiff brushes on canvas or vinyl soft tops.
Booking Questions
How do I book an appointment?
Three ways: call (813) 813-9365“>(813) 813-9365, send a request through https://detailing.tampa-bay-cleaning.com/book/, or message us on Facebook. Send your vehicle (year, make, model), ZIP, and preferred date. We confirm within hours during business hours. If you have photos of unusual condition issues (pet hair, smoke, oxidation), attach them so we can sharpen the quote.
What is the difference between booking by phone, online form, or Facebook?
Phone is fastest for same-day or urgent bookings. Online form is best for non-urgent bookings with detailed vehicle information attached. Facebook message is good for casual back-and-forth questions before committing to a date. All three end up in the same calendar and get confirmed the same way.
Will you send a reminder before the appointment?
Yes. You will get a confirmation text or email at booking, a reminder the day before, and an arrival window text the morning of. If we are running ahead or behind schedule on the day, we send an update so you are not waiting in the dark.
How far in advance should I book?
For tier 1 cities (Wesley Chapel, Tampa, Brandon, Riverview), same-day or next-day is common. For full ceramic coating packages, book 5 to 7 days ahead so we can hold a full day. Weekend slots fill up fastest, book Wednesday for Saturday.
What if it rains?
Florida afternoon storms are normal. If rain hits mid-job we cover the work and wait, or reschedule at no charge if the system is heavy. Morning slots in summer (June through September) significantly reduce the risk.
Can I reschedule or cancel?
Yes. Reschedule any time up to 24 hours before the appointment at no charge. Same-day cancellations may incur a $30 fee since we have blocked the slot. Ceramic coating deposits are refundable up to 48 hours before the appointment.
Do you do same-day appointments?
Often, yes. Tier 1 cities (Wesley Chapel, Tampa, Brandon, Riverview, Lutz, New Tampa, Carrollwood) regularly have same-day or next-day openings. Call before 11 a.m. for best chance of a same-day slot. During peak season (love bugs in May and September, holiday gift detail surge in December) book 3 to 5 days ahead.
Should I clean my car before you arrive?
No. You are paying us to clean it. The dirtier the car, the more accurate our quote and the more dramatic the before-and-after photos. Just remove personal items (kid car seats are fine to leave installed, we work around them), valuables from the console, and any obvious trash.
How do you handle children car seats?
We do not remove or re-install car seats for liability reasons. We clean around them carefully and steam the visible seat surface beneath them. If you want a full carpet shampoo under the seat, the parent removes it before the appointment and re-installs after.
Can I be added to a cancellation list?
Yes. If we are booked out 1 to 2 weeks for your preferred date, ask to be added to the cancellation list. When another customer reschedules, you get the slot offered first if you can confirm within an hour. Roughly 5 to 10 percent of weeks have at least one cancellation slot open up.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. If something we did is not right, we come back and fix it at no charge within 48 hours of the appointment. Ceramic coatings carry the manufacturer warranty (1, 3, or 5 years depending on package) which we register on your behalf at install time. Receipts and warranty paperwork are sent to your email.
